Persistent struggles with reading, spelling, or comprehension?

Could it be dyslexia?

Reading, spelling, and comprehension challenges can deeply affect a child’s academic success and self-esteem. Recognizing the signs of dyslexia early can be a crucial step towards effective support. Based on research from organizations like the International Dyslexia Association and the Mayo Clinic, here’s a checklist of common indicators.

COULD YOUR CHILD BE EXPERIENCING:

  • Early Childhood (Preschool/Kindergarten):

    • Delayed speech development compared to peers.
    • Difficulty learning and remembering names of letters, numbers, and colors.
    • Trouble learning nursery rhymes or playing rhyming games.
    • Problems forming words correctly (e.g., reversing sounds or syllables like “pasghetti” for “spaghetti”).
    • Difficulty recognizing or producing rhymes.
    • Struggling to follow multi-step directions.
    • A family history of dyslexia or reading/spelling difficulties.

    School Age (Elementary/Primary School):

    • Reading well below the expected level for their age.
    • Slow, effortful, and inaccurate reading (decoding words).
    • Difficulty sounding out unfamiliar words.
    • Frequent guessing at words instead of applying phonics.
    • Poor reading fluency (reading slowly, choppily, or without expression).
    • Problems with reading comprehension, even if they understand spoken language.
    • Significant and inconsistent spelling errors (spelling the same word differently in the same piece of writing).
    • Difficulty remembering sequences (e.g., alphabet, days of the week, multiplication tables).
    • Trouble with word retrieval or using imprecise language (e.g., saying “thing” or “stuff” frequently).
    • Avoiding activities that involve reading or writing.
    • Difficulty distinguishing between similarly shaped letters (e.g., ‘b’ and ‘d’, ‘p’ and ‘q’).
    • Challenges following multi-step instructions.
    • Poor handwriting or messy written work.
    • Increased frustration or anxiety related to schoolwork and reading tasks.

    Teens and Adults:

    • Continues to read slowly and laboriously.
    • Avoids reading for pleasure or academic/work requirements.
    • Persistent spelling problems.
    • Difficulty summarizing stories or complex texts.
    • Trouble learning foreign languages.
    • Poor memory for facts, names, or dates.
    • Challenges with time management and organization.
    • Difficulty with word problems in math.
    • May use imprecise language or struggle to find the right word in conversation (“tip of the tongue” moments).

The root cause of their reading, spelling, and comprehension challenges could lie in underlying cognitive skills. We strongly suggest that your child could benefit from targeted support to address their reading struggles. Early intervention is key to building a strong foundation and fostering a lifelong love of reading.

Success Stories

From “A Little Bit” to Reading on My Own!

Brain Training at BEC was fun because of the procedures. I like the tabletop exercises that has letter sounds. For the digital, I like the memory game.

Brain Training helped me read faster and better. Before brain training, I knew how to read a little bit. I needed help before with answering homework. But now I try to do them on my own.

Stronger Reading Skills, Better Grades

I first heard about brain training from a post that my mom saw on Instagram. It was something she thought could help me for when I take college entrance exams. At first I wasn’t sure that this was something I wanted to do. But I decided to take the assessment anyways. Through this we learned that there were plenty of reasons behind my struggles with reading, writing essays, memorizing and many more.

After doing BEC over the summer, I noticed there were improvements specifically in my academics. I was able to retain my lessons from class better which translated to better scores in tests and performance tasks. Overall, brain training was challenging but in the long run I definitely think that it helped me become a better student.

Frequently Asked Questions

Reading difficulties often stem from underlying cognitive skills weaknesses, such as auditory processing, visual processing, attention, memory, and processing speed. Our programs target and strengthen these foundational cognitive abilities that are crucial for effective reading.

Unlike traditional reading interventions that focus solely on reading techniques, our approach targets the core cognitive skills that enable reading. By strengthening these underlying abilities through engaging and adaptive exercises, we create lasting improvements in reading fluency, comprehension, and overall learning.

Our programs are adaptable and can be tailored to address the cognitive needs of children across a range of ages and reading abilities, from early learners (kindergarten) to those facing more significant challenges.

Our assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that takes about 1 hour to complete. It's designed as a series of engaging "brain games" to assess key cognitive skills like attention, memory, processing speed, reasoning, and visual/auditory processing. This helps us identify your child's unique cognitive profile and pinpoint specific areas of strength and weakness that may be contributing to their reading struggles.

After the assessment, our Center Director will personally explain the results to you in detail, providing clear insights into your child's cognitive profile. You will also receive a comprehensive written report outlining these findings. Based on the results, we will recommend the most suitable research-based program and personalized approach to help your child.

You can easily schedule an assessment by messaging or calling us at +639563121212, filling out the Book an Assessment form, or emailing us at brainexerciseclub@gmail.com. We'll be happy to answer any further questions and find a convenient time for your child's assessment.
